Electrical, tiles and lobby

Beginning last Friday, the Shahan crew has been working hard to rough-in the lobby upstairs, based on Ron’s drawings. They were up at 6am today to make sure they got it all done by tomorrow, which is when the Boyer crew is coming in to frame out the rest of it and start hanging and finishing drywall. They said they were coming along great this afternoon and I think it’s all done and ready.

Jepson’s also delivered a lumber order today for Ron and his crew to start tomorrow. Even though they can’t work in the lobby proper until the drywall is finished and the vinyl is on the floor, they are going to start putting big pieces together in the empty large theater space for installation next week.

My parents visited from Texas this weekend, and we took the time to paint and install the wall sconces in the booths downstairs, and then more tiling of the floor mosaic. With three people working at once – dad putting glue on the tiles, Bich selecting and setting them, and me pressing them permanently in place – it went a lot faster but STILL seemed to take forever. We have 10 rows finished now, which is 1/3 of the way done. With 90 tiles across, that means we have individually selected, cut and laid 900 so far – with 1800 left to go. Ugh. Check out the progress below.

The other thing we got done was some much needed cleaning. Dirt was really starting to get tracked all over the new carpet, so we vacuumed and blocked off the area to discourage folks from walking through. We also dusted the whole west side of the room – the walls and booths. Now that we’re not kicking up much dust downstairs anymore, this kind of stuff really needed to happen.

Talk about attention to detail! Looks fabulous.

This project must be costing you a fortune; I just hope Kirksville proves worthy.

We’re being smart about it to keep costs low. For example, with this tile floor, we could have spent $286 in 1-inch tiles. Instead, we spent $36 in bigger tiles and cut them down to size. We’re also doing a lot of the work ourselves. I can’t imagine what it would cost to pay someone to put a mosaic like this together. I’m doing all the painting myself, a lot of the detail work, etc.

I also have a lot of dear friends and family who have done favors for the project over the last two years. All this means that it’s takes a little longer than your typical construction project, but I think it will be worth the wait.

Bich and Todd, we are so proud of you for continuing work on an almost insurmountable project that will be such a blessing to Kirksville. It is also rewarding to read that you are also having some fun (slightly different than my idea of fun—however, I do do mean jobs of toilet cleaning and bed making)and family time while working on it.
Randall Shahan did some electrical work for us so you have an A-1 group with his crew.
